HARTFORD, CT — Hartford HealthCare and UnitedHealthcare have reached a multiyear contract agreement that ensures UnitedHealthcare members will maintain in-network access to Hartford HealthCare’s hospitals, physicians, and services, according to the two companies and the Connecticut Office of the Healthcare Advocate.

“We are grateful that patients have ongoing access to Hartford HealthCare,” State Healthcare Advocate Kathleen Holt said in a statement. “However, we must recognize the distress and harm caused to patients who, for weeks, were left in fear of losing access to their doctors and critical care teams. The anxiety we heard from callers — including cancer survivors, families managing chronic conditions, and newly enrolled consumers — was real and deeply concerning.”

The agreement prevents what would have been a significant disruption for thousands of Connecticut residents, as the previous contract was set to expire at midnight on Monday, according to the UnitedHealthCare website.

Without a deal, patients covered under UnitedHealthcare’s employer-sponsored, individual commercial, and Medicare Advantage plans would have been forced to seek care outside of Hartford HealthCare’s network, potentially leading to higher costs and continuity-of-care concerns.

While the resolution provides relief for many patients, Holt said the uncertainty had taken an emotional and financial toll on patients. She also expressed concern about what she called the lack of transparency in the final agreement and the broader implications of such contract disputes.

“We need to start a serious conversation in Connecticut about how to minimize the impact of these disputes going forward,” she said. “The current process leaves consumers with no voice and no control — and that must change.”

In its own statement Tuesday, UnitedHealthcare thanked customers for their patience and said the company was “honored to continue supporting all of the people throughout Connecticut who depend on us for access to quality and affordable health care.”

Hartford HealthCare also welcomed the agreement, with a short announcement on the company website.

“Hartford HealthCare and United Healthcare have reached an agreement that will ensure that United Healthcare members continue to have uninterrupted access to Hartford HealthCare’s physicians, hospitals, and services. This is good news for our patients and communities, and allows us to continue our mission to improve the health and healing of all.”

The agreement affects a significant number of state residents. UnitedHealthcare serves more than 608,000 members in the state, with access to over 26,600 providers, according to the company.
