I Test Beauty Products for a Living, and These Are the Best for Fall 2024 (2024)

Fall is officially here, and I’m excited to finally swap out my favorite summer beauty products in favor of the best new beauty products for autumn. While the dip in temperature is a welcome reprieve from the humid East Coast summer — and our electric bills will soon become dramatically lower — chilly weather can cause significant beauty concerns. High winds lead to chapped lips and dry skin, while frizzy hair will become more commonplace, meaning it’s time to incorporate thicker, creamier new beauty products for fall into our routines to help treat and prevent these problems. And that is where I come in as our beauty editor to help you shop for products to alleviate your seasonal beauty concerns.

How We Chose

Best Products aims to deliver you editor-tested and expert-vetted gift ideas. As our beauty editor with eight years of professional experience covering the space, I spent three months testing quite literally hundreds of new beauty products appropriate for autumn. Here’s a quick overview of what I considered when selecting recent launches across all beauty categories to determine the most relevant fall-ready skincare and haircare tools.

Prioritized Deeply Hydrating Skincare and Haircare Products

All skin types, including dry and normal, benefit from lightweight lotions in spring and summer. However, swapping out these those for richer creams to enhance your complexion is advisable come fall. “Adjusting your skin care is necessary for better temperature regulation between your skin and the surrounding environment,” board-certified dermatologist Dr. Rachel Nazarian, M.D., F.A.A.D, previously told me for our Summer Skincare Awards. These featured moisturizing and glow-enhancing beauty products help rebalance my complexion, offer anti-aging benefits, and some are even from reader-favorite and expert-loved brands, such as EltaMD and Isdin.

Even our hair needs more TLC this fall, and Dyson delivers with its foray into haircare products. The brand created pre-styling and post-styling creams that are categorized by hair types: straight and wavy or curly and coily. I use the latter, which is richer and more moisturizing of the bunch since textured hair is typically dryer due to our curl patterns.

Focused on Expert-Founded Brands

Many leading beauty experts, including notable cosmetic chemist Ron Robinson of BeautyStat Cosmetics, created standout new launches. For example, Robinson used his three decades of experience crafting products for Estee Lauder- and L’Oréal-owned brands, plus Hailey Bieber’s Rhode skincare line, to craft the BeautyStat Cosmetics Triple-Plump Coconut Milk Serum. It hydrates, nourishes, and strengthens skin effortlessly while providing a natural radiance to an otherwise dull complexion.

Considered Skincare Products Help Us Look Less Tired

If you live in the Northeast as I do, you understand that switching to Standard Time in November means the sun disappears early, which can be a tad distressing. This year, the annual time change occurs exceptionally close to the presidential election, which is particularly stressful and downright overwhelming for many people. Prioritizing self-care with these practical new beauty products can, at the very least, allow us to do something that feels momentarily good with both short- and long-term skin benefits. For example, the Charlotte Tilbury under-eye masks can help brighten dark circles and puffiness, common signs of aging associated with lack of sleep, stress, and traveling across various timezones.

Streamlined Our Routines with Multipurpose Launches

As much as I respect having rather labor-intensive skincare routines, sometimes we just need to embrace simplicity. Not only is paring down our routines a great way to save time and identify which ingredients and product formulations are ideal for our beauty needs, it also helps us save some money on items not aligned with our beauty goals. For example, the new Embryolisse moisturizer is a gel-cream ideal for people with oily and combination skin looking for hydration that won’t leave them greasy. It has a gorgeous peach tint that adds an impressive glow to my face, but it looks equally stunning on the body, such as along your collarbone or décolletage with any sleeveless or deep V-neck tops and dresses.

For my fellow makeup lovers, OG beauty influencer Huda Kattan and Best New Beauty Award-winning makeup artist Danessa Myricks created newness that can be applied in multiple ways. For example, Myricks’s concealers work as a foundation, highlighter, bronzer, or contour shade, depending on your preferred hues. Huda Beauty’s liquid blushes are incredibly long-lasting and add a fresh monochrome vibe to your cheeks and pout.

Ahead is my tightly edited group of the 20 best new beauty products for fall. They support an inclusive group of beauty concerns and budgets. And many winners happen to be sold at reader-favorite sites, including Sephora, Ulta, and Amazon.

HA5 Hydra Collagen Replenish and Restore Hydrator

The upgraded version of SkinMedica’s beloved serum contains double the hyaluronic acid for up to 48 hours of hydration. Hyaluronic acid is incredible for the skin as we head into the chilly weather season since it acts like a moisture magnet, holding up to 1,000 times its weight in water.

Combined with its proprietary collagen for additional hydration and a skin-plumping effect, I can rely on this lightweight, fragrance-free face serum for achieving suppler and softer skin both in the short- and long-term. It takes about 12 weeks to see full results, but so far I’ve noticed my skin feels and looks more rebalanced, and my usual flaking from retinol is less noticeable.

Plus, Advanced Vitisensce Technology replenishes humectants to help boost and retain moisture. HA5 is also lightweight, fragrance-free, and non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t congest pores and lead to acne or cause a greasy appearance. My face looks fresher and healthier whenever I slather on this paraben-free serum, hence the best overall distinction.

Power Mist Hand Sanitizer Spiced Pumpkin-Tini

With the recent increase in Covid cases and flu season underway, washing our hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds is key. However, for instances where that’s not doable, like while riding public transportation or during a park picnic, this Touchland hand sanitizer comes in clutch. It’s got an impressive 70% alcohol concentration, which is higher than the CDC’s guidance of at least a 60%.

Touchland is also the most hydrating hand sanitizer brand I’ve tested, which is why it has been part of my wellness routine since 2020. The combination of aloe vera and radish root ferment provides excellent hydration, while lemon essential oil nourishes and purifies my hands.

The brand dropped three limited-edition fall-inspired scents, and while they’re all enticing, I’ve been loving Spiced Pumpkin-Tini the most. While some pumpkin-inspired beauty products smell over the top and make my nose itch, this smells like the best version of a pumpkin spice latte. It opens up with cinnamon sugar and clove buds before settling into middle notes of pumpkin puree and ground nutmeg. Rounding out the trifecta of cozy, aromatic scents is whipped cream with a hint of espresso.

Triple-Plump Coconut Milk Serum

BeautyStat Cosmetics is most known for its impressive vitamin C serum, but a new standout from the brand I’ve been enjoying is the Triple-Plump Coconut Milk Serum. This face serum provides instant hydration and uses polyglutamic acid to impart a glowing finish to my face.

Beyond hyaluronic acid that rejuvenates my skin and helps plump up fine there, the inclusion of a coconut complex helps seal in moisture and nourish and strengthen my skin. There’s also microsilver, which aids my skin’s microbiome for extra radiance and a clearer complexion.

A little bit of this creamy face serum goes a long way. I can wear it as my sole moisturizer or layered under a face cream for additional skin benefits. I also appreciate that it absorbs quickly, allowing me to slather on my tinted sunscreen or face makeup without waiting for an unnecessarily long dry down period.

Radiant Complexion Cream in Peach

Embryolisse is a reader-favorite French beauty brand, and I’m equally enamored with its products, including the popular Lait Creme Concentrate. The new Radiant Complexion Cream is an excellent day gel-cream that’s ideal for oily and combination skin. Those with dry, normal, and mature skin types can also benefit from the lightweight moisture that blends smoothing skincare benefits with makeup.

The Radiant Complexion Cream also lives up to its namesake. It boasts a unique light apricot tint that adds a golden luminosity to my face. The glow is so appealing that I’ll slather some onto my neck and décolletage while wearing scoop neck and V-neck tops and dresses.

I also like to apply this multipurpose cream to my face and under my eyes to help minimize signs of fatigue and general tiredness. I can also skip using a face primer when wearing this face cream, since it creates a gorgeous glowy base layer for concealer and foundation.

Most importantly, it relies on expert-loved skincare ingredients to moisturize my skin throughout the fall season. There’s hyaluronic acid to plump and hydrate, while silk tree bark extract revives my tired complexion and detoxifies the skin. It even contains nasturtium flower, a botanical that helps boost oxygen flow to the skin, resulting in a healthier-looking complexion.

Eryfotona Ageless Ultralight Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

Ugh, OK, this technically isn’t a new product, but rather, a Sephora brand launch. Throughout my eight-year career, dermatologists consistently named Isdin their go-to sunscreen brand. The only problem? It’s a Spanish company that is only sold at select dermatologist offices in America. Thankfully, Isdin’s hero products, including this tinted and united Eryfotona Ageless SPF, are now being sold at Sephora — and my skin couldn’t be happier.

Surprisingly, the OG un-tinted version didn’t leave me pale like a ghost, which isn’t the norm for most mineral sunscreens. However, I prefer the tinted option because it replaces my need for face makeup during the day. I’ll shake up the 3.4-fluid ounce container, lightly squeeze the sunscreen emulsion onto two fingers, and apply it to my face.

Eryfotona Ageless is totally worth the splurge because it’s the only SPF I’ve come across that uses DNA-repair enzymes to treat current sun damage and prevent future photoaging. After just two days, I noticed my face was less flushed, and the only thing I changed in my routine was incorporating this sunscreen.

Recovery Amino Acid Foaming Facial Cleanser

Dermatologists regularly name-check EltaMD as the maker of some of the best SPFs on the market, but you also shouldn’t sleep on the company’s new face wash. The brand created this gentle cleanser with delicate post-procedure skin in mind, so it’s an excellent pick for someone who enjoys injectables, chemical peels, and lasers.

Those dealing with the typical beauty concerns associated with using a topical retinoid will adore this face wash. The secret is a blend of three amino acids that help strengthen the skin’s barrier, while bisabolol and ginger root help alleviate redness. It also effectively removes SPF and face makeup without irritating my skin.

I like to combine warm water with a pump of the cleanser in the morning, but in the evenings, I use two pumps to ensure every layer of skincare and makeup is gone before following the rest of my routine.

Youthtopia Liquid Exfoliating Apple Face Peel

Sure, apple picking is a cute fall hobby. But did you know that when applied topically, apples can help your skin with healthy aging by exfoliating dead skin cells and brightening a dull complexion? Origins tapped into the powerful skin benefits apples offer by creating the two-piece Youthtopia collection. The exfoliant is my favorite because it combines apple stem cell extract, an antioxidant-rich apple peel ferment, apple cider vinegar, and glycolic acid to smooth uneven skin texture and gently refine the look of my large pores.

Thanks to the inclusion of a collagen-protecting peptide and essential fatty acids found in apple seed oil, I notice my skin doesn’t feel dry or flakey whenever I use this chemical face exfoliant.

Apple peel ferment is particularly enticing since it’s rich in antioxidants that help neutralize environmental damage, like UV rays or air pollution. It is also made from upcycled apple peels that would have gone in the garbage. The inclusion is something relatively small that I can appreciate and consider a step in the right direction to help minimize overconsumption and general waste.

And if you’re curious about the scent, it’s refreshing and juicy like an apple with additional notes of melon and peach, herbaceous galbanum, and citrus litsea cubeba oil.

Jet Lag Skin-Soothing Hydration Mist

Summer Fridays crafted an epic face spray that’s vegan-friendly, is safe for eczema-prone skin, and only costs $21. Thanks to a proprietary blend of ingredients, the Jet Lag Skin-Soothing Hydration Mist does just that: calm, comfort, and soothe my easily irritated skin. Redness and dryness caused by retinol use disappear faster than before I started incorporating this facial spray into my routine. It’s also infused with a blend of skin barrier-supporting ingredients and glycerin to attract and hold water to my dehydrated skin.

I like to use mine as a facial toner, and after applying face makeup, since my skin can use some extra hydration and glow. I hold the blue bottle about 12 inches from my face for the best results because if I have it any closer, the mist is less refined.

With the holiday season is fast approaching, plenty of long-distance traveling is likely on the horizon. Air cabins are notoriously dehydrating for the skin, so this will also be a great beauty gift idea for your loved ones.

Chitosan Pre-Styling Hair Cream for Flexible Hold

Dyson’s cult-favorite Supersonic hairdryer and Airwrap styling tools are beloved by plenty of beauty enthusiasts, including myself. But this launch marks Dyson’s foray into the haircare game. The Pre-Styling Cream has two conditioning versions: a lightweight option for straight and wavy tresses, and a slightly heavier alternative for curly and coily strands.

I have very dry hair, so I use five pumps of the curly and coily version. However, you can use anywhere from two to five pumps, depending on your hair density (number of strands), thickness (how wide each individual strand is), and length. A good rule of thumb is that you’ll use less product when hair is shorter, finer, or thinner and more for longer, thicker, or fuller (more dense) hair. Start slow and add extra as needed to avoid waste and weighing down your hair.

The oyster mushroom-derived chitosan supports hair bonds for healthier strands and minimizes frizz. When I rub the cream in between my palms, the formulation turns into a transparent serum. Most people only need to apply from the mid-lengths to the ends of their hair, but my hair type can benefit from applying closer to the root as needed. After heat styling with my Dyson Supersonic hairdryer, I can lock things in place with the Dyson Chitosan Post-Styling Serum for around two days. (The longevity of my hairstyle varies based on the elements, such as high winds and physical activity.)

Future Solution LX Eye and Lip Contour Regenerating Cream

I know the $155 price tag can be a bit of a jump scare, but hear me out: I only need a teeny bit of product for immediate hydration and long-term improvement of lines and puffiness. Each container should last for at least a couple of months, as it only takes a rice-size grain of product to smooth around your eye area and about the same measurement for your lips.

I don’t have more noticeable signs of aging, such as deeper wrinkles and sagging, so I can’t directly speak to improvement in those respects. However, due to the combination of an impressive ingredient list, Shiseido’s reputation for creating anti-aging products with mature skin in mind, and my positive experience with this launch, I’m quite comfortable recommending it to those looking to age gracefully.

Speaking of ingredients, Shiseido’s eye and lip cream has a few standouts to highlight. My favorite is a proprietary longevity complex that’s just a marketing term for an impressive blend of enmei herb, brightening vitamin C, antioxidant-rich green tea, and skingenecell 1P, which is rich in amino acids.

Ultimate Miracle Worker Nourish & Rejuvenate Face & Neck Cream

TBH, I don’t typically use a neck cream or serum. However, after recently celebrating a birthday, I’ve been thinking more about anti-aging so I can avoid getting neck wrinkles. Enter this two-in-one cream that works on the face and neck, saving us money and time from buying multiple products. The not-so-secret ingredient is retinol, a type of retinoid that helps boost skin cell turnover and collagen production while improvign uneven skin texture, fine lines, and wrinkles. No wonder Philosophy calls it the Ultimate Miracle Worker — it really does nourish my skin and help it look and feel rejuvenated.

This retinol face moisturizer is safe for sensitive skin and those who are first-time retinol users. I’m not typically a huge fan of retinols, but this face cream hasn’t caused any irritation or compromised my skin barrier. I’ve since moved on to a prescription-strength retinoid, but consider Ultimate Miracle Worker a great introductory retinol cream.

Fenty Eau de Parfum Solid Perfume

Want to smell like Rihanna? I’m sure many members of the Navy, the collective name of her super fans, would love to, and now they can do so with her new fragrance. The spicy floral blend of magnolia, musk, tangerine, and Bulgarian rose draws you in and keeps your attention for several hours.

You only need a little product to enjoy the enticing unisex aroma. To experience the most impactful effect, I like to rub the balm-like solid perfume onto my pulse points where my body gives off the most heat. These include the inner wrists, inside the elbows, behind the ears, and décolleté.

While her traditional liquid fragrance is a new classic, the new compact-style packaging for Rihanna’s solid perfume is super convenient for travel and on-the-go touchups, like before leaving the office for dinner and drinks. The glossy amber packaging also feels and looks luxurious. I like that the compact also includes a mirror to check my makeup or teeth after dining out.

Ultra Body Mega Moisture Squalane Cream

Sure, Kiehl’s is relatively popular. But TBH, more people should be talking about this top-of-the-line body cream. It’s deeply nourishing and safe for sensitive skin types, including those who deal with eczema like myself. Notably, ceramides, squalane, and glacial glycoprotein help improve the skin barrier and soften dry skin.

The brand swears this moisturizes skin for up to three days, even through showering. I won’t skip my daily shower, but I noticed that my body felt and looked more hydrated during my testing, and the only variable was the inclusion of this body cream. Despite the rich formula, it absorbs quickly, which is fantastic because I can get dressed almost immediately after showering.

The Courtyard Floral Scent

Our readers love home fragrances, and so do I. Over the last few months, I tried plenty of room sprays and essential oils, including the newest Aromatech drops. Inspired by the ultra-luxurious vibe of St. Regis hotels, The Courtyard quickly became my favorite from a group of about a dozen home fragrance newness I tested.

I don’t typically gravitate toward rose scents. Many are just overly flowery and smell synthetic. The Courtyard is as elevated as staying at the elite Marriott resort — a blend of white lilies, American Beauty roses, and delicate apple blossoms is noticeable but remind me of a freshly cut bouquet. Notes of green stem and apricot nectar combine with warm amber and champagne’s light, crisp essence for a truly luxurious feel bottled up.

Yummy Skin Lift & Flex Hydrating Concealer

Skip the basic complexion products and opt for this impressive concealer from makeup artist Danessa Myricks. The brand is part of the inaugural 2024 Best New Beauty Awards class so you already know my expectations are high — and the brand delivered.

The Lift & Flex Hydrating Concealer is the latest offshoot of the brand’s signature Yummy Skin collection. Available in 20 inclusive shades, Lift & Flex provides a gorgeous medium-to-full coverage. It can replace foundation, or you can strategically apply it to cover up zits, red and dark spots, and even as a highlighter or contour.

Most importantly, it’s made of skin-loving ingredients, including nine botanical components. Notably, there is centella asiatica, sometimes called cica, which tackles redness. There’s also antioxidant-rich vitamin E; caffeine, a vasoconstrictor that helps brighten and tighten skin; along with sodium hyaluronate for moisture.

Hollywood Skin Secrets Immediate Eye Revival Patches

I’ve been struggling with getting the recommended 8 hours of nightly sleep, which makes my dark circles more prominent. Celebrity makeup artist, entrepreneur, and Best New Beauty Award-winner Charlotte Tilbury created my go-to solution for looking well-rested. These under-eye masks help brighten my dark circles and minimize occasional puffiness.

They have the right amount of tackiness, so they never fall off while walking around my apartment, on the plane, or doing my makeup. Eye masks, like this Charlotte Tilbury option, are excellent for catching inevitable eyeshadow fallout. Speaking of cosmetics, this eye mask creates a great base layer before applying under-eye concealer. I find my concealer creases less when I first utilize the Charlotte Tilbury under-eye mask.

These under-eye masks also work in just 10 minutes, which is ideal for anyone who likes to keep their self-care routine to a minimum. Even better? After 10 minutes, I like to apply mine to my smile lines for plumper-looking skin.

Blush Filter Soft Glow Liquid Blush in Strawberry Cream

I usually use a powder blush, but Huda Beauty converted me into a fan of liquid blushes, which are normally runny, stain my fingers, and fade relatively quickly on my oily cheeks. Blush Filter, on the other hand, is a new generation of liquid blush.

The creamy blush contains impactful pigments that deposit impressive color payoff with minimal product. All you need is three small dots of blush for a gorgeous flush. (The unique doe-foot applicator that resembles a small peanut simplifies applying rogue to your face. Just blend with your fingers for the most natural look.) I appreciate that this liquid blush is also infused with finely milled micro-pearls for a soft, non-chalky glow.

There are five colors to chose from, but I am currently obsessed with Strawberry Cream, a dusty rose that looks equally flattering on my cheeks and lip. You can also mix and match colors to suit your vibe for the day. For example, a mix of Strawberry Cream and Black Cherry creates a gorgeous pink-to-cherry ombre flush that’s trendy.

Easy Blur Natural Airbrush Foundation

Huda Beauty isn’t sponsoring us, but the brand knows how to make incredible makeup, hence a second inclusion. Unlike other medium-to-buildable coverage liquid foundations that can feel heavy or goopy on the skin, Easy Blur is incredibly lightweight. I only needed a single pump of product to achieve an airbrushed finish in the daytime.

Unlike other new foundations I tested, Easy Blur looks equally seamless using my fingers, a beauty sponge, or various foundation brushes, such as the double-ended IT Cosmetics brush.

Aesthetics aside, Huda Beauty’s new foundation contains 1.5% niacinamide, a dermatologist-approved skincare ingredient known for helping to improve uneven skin tone and texture. It’s also lauded for its ability to help sooth skin. There’s also silica that creates a pore-blurring, airbrushed finish without any of the mess or expenses associated with airbrush makeup application.

GetSet Blur + Set Talc-Free Pressed Setting Powder

Most of us don’t want to walk around looking like a greasy slice of pizza, but when you have oily or combination skin like myself, a shiny face is inevitable. The brand new GetSet Blur powder ensures my face makeup is sweat-, transfer-, and humidity-proof with minimal touchups needed throughout the day.

Like all Tower 28 products, GetSet Blur is safe for sensitive skin types. Instead of using drying alcohol or questionable talc and parabens, GetSet Blur contains kaolin clay to absorb oil and control shine. There is even hydrating squalane and hydrophobic silica to repel sweat.

It’s available in four colors, including the featured Translucent shade, which flatters all complexions no matter your skin tone. The Translucent shade is undetectable, making it my secret weapon on no-makeup-makeup days. It also pairs lightly with my roster of foundations, including Huda Beauty, Oxygenetix, Charlotte Tilbury, and Armani Beauty.

And as its name implies, GetSet Blur does an excellent job of blurring imperfections while also setting makeup in place. Using a fluffy powder brush is a solid application method, but I get the best results using the included lavender powder puff that really works the product into my skin.

Lip Treatment Oil in Happy

Lip oils are so much better than glosses during the fall and winter seasons as they’re designed with emollient ingredients, but still provide a shiny finish.

Ami Cole is a rare breed among lip oils, as it always feels like I’m wearing lip balm. My pout looks plumper and feels cushiony for hours at a time. It is made with an impressive hydrating trifecta of baobab, camellia seed, and passion fruit seed oils that also minimize lip lines. I find this lip oil so hydrating that sometimes at night, I’ll reach for Ami Cole over boring balms to help soothe and prevent chapped lips.

Happy is a soft, peachy nude that looks flattering across all skin tones, including those with melanin-rich complexions. This lip oil wears beautifully on its own or when layered with various brown, pink, and peach lipliners and lipsticks.
